COMPETITIONS & OPPORTUNITIES
 
MEMBER CONCERTO/SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

A Solo and Concerto competition is held annually. The preceding year’s Solo or Concerto Performance Opportunity winners are not eligible to compete for a Solo or Concerto.

The Solo competition is open to members in String Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Intermediate Flute Choir who performed in the first concert of the season. Solo winners must provide their own accompanists and will receive a stipend, determined by the Board, to offset their costs.

The Concerto competition is open to members in the Symphony Orchestra and Advanced Flute Choir who performed in the first concert of the season.

A Scholarship competition is held annually. Scholarships must be used to advance the members’ music education, and will expire in September of the year granted. The scholarship competition is open to all members who performed in the first concert of the season.


String Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra will be allocated a portion of the total scholarship funds based on membership.  Members of Intermediate Flute Choir will compete with Concert Orchestra, Members of Advanced Flute Choir will compete with Symphony Orchestra. F
or all competitions, members will get one audition on an orchestral instrument. Piano may be used in the Concerto competition.

Audition requirements:
  • Contestant must be a DYS member in good standing.
  • Contestant must not have more than two (2) unexcused absences.
  • Contestant must be fully prepared to play a movement from a concerto in the standard orchestral repertoire or a composition of similar stature with an orchestral accompaniment.
  • Contestant may play with sheet music at time of audition, but piece must be memorized at time of performance.
  • Accompaniment is not required for the audition.

First impressions are important to judges!  This includes your appearance and dress.
