FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When to clap is cause of worry for many concert goers. In general, you should applaud: After the orchestra tunes, when the conductor enters the stage. Look at the program and take note of how many movements are in a piece. There may be long pauses between movements, but audiences typically applaud at the end of the entire piece. At a classical music performance, it is customary not to applaud until a work is completely finished and the last note has died away. It’s easy to be fooled by breaks between movements in a longer work such as a symphony or suite; there may be a pause of several seconds as the conductor and players adjust their music and mentally prepare for the next movement. If in doubt, wait until others begin to applaud.
CONCERTS
Can I photograph or videotape the performance?
No. The use of cameras, video cameras and camera phones is prohibited during the performances. The use of these devices distracts the musicians during their performance. Videos of the performances will be available for viewing on our website.
When should I clap?
At the beginning of the concert when the Concertmaster (first chair violinist) enters the stage.
What should I do with my cell phone during the concert?
We ask that you keep your cell phone or pager turned off throughout the concert.
Are siblings and other children welcome to attend performances?
Children are encouraged and welcome to attend, however even slight noises can be extremely distracting to your fellow listeners during a classical music performance. For this reason, and so that you yourself can enjoy the concert fully:
Avoid talking, even briefly, until breaks in the performance. Remind young children before the concert, and at breaks if necessary, of the need to be quiet.
What if I need to leave in the middle of the concert?
We know that families sometimes leave school musical performances when their children’s part is finished. A DYS performance is different — please plan to stay for the entire concert even if your player appears early in the program.
This has several benefits:
• Your player has the opportunity to hear other ensembles and works. (Learning to listen to and enjoy classical music goes hand in hand with learning to perform it.)
• The performers in all the ensembles have the pleasure of playing to a large audience.
• You get your money’s worth for the ticket or pass you purchased.
• You get to enjoy the punch and cookies.
Membership fees may be paid by check or money order.
